I’m a big fan of homemade condiments, especially flavored or compound butters. They are so ridiculously easy to make and taste AMAZING.

Over the holidays, I shared our brown sugar cinnamon butter and was pleased to see how much you guys loved that recipe so I thought it was about time to show you my easy homemade honey butter recipe.

Honey Butter Ingredients

This four ingredient recipe is so easy to make! Here’s what you need to make it:

  • Unsalted Butter  You want to go with unsalted butter for this recipe so that you can control the amount of salt. The butter needs to be softened before mixing so set out while you gather the rest of the ingredients.
  • Honey  I use 1/4 cup honey in my recipe. You can use a little more, a little less, it’s entirely up to you. I suggest you make it as written first and then next time – and there will be a next time – you can make any adjustments you want.
  • Powdered Sugar You may be thinking, powdered sugar? Why more sweetener? The powdered sugar doesn’t just add an additional touch  of sweetness, It actually gives the honey butter a nice spreading consistency and makes it thicker and easier to handle.
  • Sea Salt I like to use seas salt in this recipe but if you don’t have it, any other salt will do. It provides balance to the honey butter and it super necessary.

    Honey Butter Recipe FAQs

  • Does Honey Butter Need to be Refrigerated? You’re okay leaving it out for a day or two as long as it’s in a storage jar or other tightly sealed container. But after that, yes, it definitely needs to be refrigerated. It will last about 2 weeks in the fridge.
  • Can I Serve Straight From the Fridge?  This honey butter needs to be served at room temperature just like you would regular butter. That way it’s nice and soft and spreadable. Give it about an hour or so to come to room temperature.
  • Can Honey Butter Be Frozen?  Don’t think you will eat all of it in the next two weeks? No problem. Freeze the honey butter by transferring it to plastic wrap and tightly wrapping with several layers. Place in a freezer bag and freeze for up to 2 months. Let it thaw overnight in the refrigerator before using.
  • Can I Use Salted Butter Instead?  Yes, if that’s all you have on hand, it’ll totally work. Just omit the sea salt from the recipe and then taste test and the end to see if it needs more salt.
  • What Are Some Good Storage Containers?  Small mason jars like these work great but really any glass jar with a lid will work. Feel free to use a butter crock too!
